This spring, Checker Signs installed the architectural letters to complete the City of Morden’s East Entrance Feature. The 1/2 inch thick black aluminum letters were set in the concrete
sign beam.
In addition, the Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre (CFDC) staff worked with Block Stoneworks to complete the project with the sandblasting of the CFDC image into the concrete beam.
Although the feature is certainly a new take on entrance features, former cedar entrance sign that was designed, constructed and installed by Checker Signs in the 1980’s.

The “relax” bench design took a year to create. The inspiration came while on vacation – noticing many benches in parks and walkways. After sitting in many benches it was discovered that design and comfort did not always match.
The sketchbook came out and the intent was to create a bench with ultimate comfort and the look of interior furniture. The first drawings were focussed on having arm rests on both ends to look like a couch. Then the reality of function, aesthetics, manufacturing ability, and cost changed the focus.
Following in both my grandfathers’ footsteps, I use my mechanical aptitude and design capabilities to create solutions for complicated problems.
My maternal grandfather Henry was a skilled machinist whose job required accuracy and finesse, using calipers that measured to 1/1000 of an inch. His father was also an inventor and fixer of all sorts of implements and devices that were used to support the farm economy. The family run machine shop stayed small as Henry did not go for flare, and did not want to expand into a big business. I too struggle with the ambitious entrepreneurial spirit compared to supporting a small business.
As a young man, my paternal grandfather, Julius had some woodwork training under a master craftsman. When he arrived in Canada, he began to assemble a woodwork shop, with power supplied by a large gas engine. Julius was a kind of intuitive engineer, and built a number of his tools himself: table saws, lathes, and drill presses. To make the parts, he fashioned a model out of wood, then took it to the foundry to make castings. Sometimes he took these to my other grandfather, Henry, for machining. He built ladders, spinning wheels, coffins, furniture, truck-boxes, etc. Doodling and designing were his after-hours past-time.
A marketing professional arrived at Checker Signs with the need to promote their extensive eyewear collection. They desired a larger than life pair of eyeglass frames. Here was another challenge with the opportunity to use a CNC router, laminator, and to sand and sculpt wood into a three dimensional, fully operational, four foot hinged pair of frames. Merle looked forward to this job, knowing it would be labour intensive.
The contractor of this building project required floor tiles to be sandblasted prior to installation, as well as future onsite sandblasting. They were unable to secure a provider for both of these requirements in their city. We were contacted to see if we would have the equipment, skills and abilities for this project. So the checklist was as follows.
